As artists living and working in Chicago, it is apparent to us that many of our youth are culturally starved and in need of enrichment and nourishment from the bosom of Mother Africa. The continent of Africa offers a wealth of history, music, art, culture, and folklore. Our male youth, especially, need experiences that will strengthen the connection to their ancestral heritage and foster resolution to the identity crisis, caused by separation in slavery. S.P.I.R.I.T.S. is a community-based arts and research organization, dedicated to uplifting and deterring from gangs and drugs at-risk youth (5-21) through performing arts, education, research, and mentoring.
A major part of our goal and mission is to provide positive and culturally rich alternatives to drugs, gangs, and anti-social behavior for our African-American male youth through the study and performance of African music and masquerade art. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list, or, if you would like to assist us in our efforts through finance, in-kind, or by volunteer service, please contact us through E-mail, or at:
